Background:

By the early thirties, Wimpole was slowly shaking itself free from the fiefdom of the Wimpole Hall Estate. Conditions were still fairly primitive, it was to be 1939 before the village had electricity, mains water and sewerage.

In 1933 Gerald Agar-Roberts, the 7th Viscount Clifden, sold part of the Wimpole Hall Estate to William Henry Abbey Esq. of Sedgwick Park, Horsham, Sussex, who instructed John D Wood & Co., agents of Berkeley Square, London W1, to sell certain outlying portions of the Estate by Auction. This included most of the dwellings and land alongside Ermine Street, Arrington and the north side of Cambridge Road, New Wimpole. It was W H Abbey's wish, that before the properties were publicly offered at Auction, the existing tenants should first be given the opportunity of purchasing their holdings privately, should they so desire.

The Draft Prospectus was published in 1933 and most of the details given below are from this initial publication. By the time the public sale was held on Thursday 3rd May 1934 (at the Hardwicke Arms, Arrington), many of the lots listed had been sold or withdrawn pending private sale.

The majority of the resulting purchases were completed in 1934 and 1935.
