The Yorke Family

This is a reference page giving basic biographical details of the principal members of the Yorke Family, taking the lineage down through the five Earls of Hardwicke who owned Wimpole from 1740 to 1894. The five core marriages are as follows:

married
Margaret Cocks † M
married
Jemima Campbell
married
Elizabeth Scot Lindsay † M
married
Susan Liddell
married
Sophia Georgiana Robertina Wellesley

Members of the Yorke families are extensively cross-linked between entries. This list is in approximate date order but I have tended to keep family groups together. The list is not exhaustive and I have concentrated on family members who have clear links with Wimpole.

[PR]: Many of the baptisms, marriages and burials of members of the Yorke family are individually recorded in the Wimpole Parish Registers.
‡: denotes 'baptised at St Andrew's Parish Church, Wimpole.'
†: denotes 'interred or buried at St Andrew's Parish Church, Wimpole.' See Yorke Deaths for the full list.
M: denotes Monument or Memorial in St Andrew's Parish Church.
»«: at end of entry indicates either a genealogical 'dead end' or that the individual or family line is not pursued further on this page.
Vault: There are nine Yorke coffins interred in the Hardwicke Family Vault underneath the Chicheley Chapel at Wimpole. The vault has its own page and is also linked from the entries of the individuals concerned.

The central details for this page were taken from www.thePeerage.com, an excellent resource for hunting down members of the aristocracy. Additional information has been added from the Wimpole Parish Registers [PR] 1740-1863 and the resulting page is being checked and amended against the detailed work of Valentine Bolam and Camilla Gemmingen von Massenbach. Edward Hudson kindly sent me the missing birth details for the children of the 3rd Earl (from the The Annual Peerage of the British Empire 1827 ed). All errors on the page are probably mine.

George Anson was a navel hero who circled the globe, fought the French off the coast of America and won a famous navel victory off Cape Finisterre, amassing a fortune in the process. The money was spent on rebuilding Shugborough Hall (now a National Trust property) and to commission the mysterious Shephards' Monument with its enigmatic coded message (said by some to give the location of the Holy Grail). Elizabeth died at the age of age 34 and was buried on 26 June 1760 at Colwich, Staffordshire.

Lady Margaret Yorke
Born 21 March 1733, died 10 August 1769.
Margaret Yorke was the second daughter and youngest child of Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke † M and Margaret Cocks † M and a sister of the 2nd Earl of Hardwicke † M. She married Sir Gilbert Heathcote (1721-1785), 3rd Baronet (son of Sir John Heathcote, 2nd Baronet, and Bridget White) on 22 June 1749.
They lived at Normanton Hall in Rutlandshire and when she died in childbirth in 1769 Margaret was interred in the medieval Normanton Church. Originally the Church had been at the centre of Normanton village, but that had been cleared in 1764 by Sir Gilbert, the inhabitants being resettled elsewhere. The Church then stood isolated in Normanton Park, additions of the tower and western portico being made in 1826.
Normanton Hall and Church (1837)
and Normanton Church (today).

But there's an unusual twist to the tale. In 1970, work began to flood the Gwash valley to create the new reservoir of Rutland Water, and Normanton Church would have been lost. Margaret's [remains were removed and cremated and her?] memorial was relocated to the north wall of St Mary the Virgin Church in the nearby village of Edith Weston.
Normanton Church was eventually saved - the building floor was raised above the projected water level and the Church protected by an artificial peninsula.

"Charles Philip Yorke - Fourth Earl Of Hardwicke - Vice-Admiral R.N. - A Memoir by his Daughter [Elizabeth] the Lady Biddulph of Ledbury - dedicated to his grandchildren" is now available online as a free ebook from Project Gutenberg at Fourth Earl of Hardwicke. If you have problems with this direct link go to http://www.gutenberg.net and run a title word search on Hardwicke. The book is something of an idealised and uncritical biography (perhaps the significant clue here is "daughter" and "grandchildren") but the book includes a fascinating and detailed account mainly in his own words) of the 4th Earl's active life in the Royal Navy. You can read the book online or download for study (a download into "Word" will take up about 650 KB and it opens in 214 pages).
